International Club
I have been a member of International Club all four years of High School, and I have been President of the club for the past two years. During the first two years as a member, I got to experience and learn about the traditions from many cultures. For instance, I got to play many games correlating to Mexican holidays and attended a lecture about Hmong culture. I learned about Hmong gender roles, family structure, spirituality, landscape, food, education etc. This club greatly broadened my understanding of the world by showing me how different people experience life and go about their daily routine. It helped me compare my experiences to those of others, and reminded me that everyone has a different background. It also taught me to be grateful for the things I have and how I have lived. Each culture we learned about is very different from one another, making them as a whole difficult to compare to mine; however, I have noticed a trend that family is a cornerstone in many cultures.
As president of the club, I have had the opportunity to learn about other nations in a new way. Not only do I plan and attend the meetings, I often present about other cultures or listen to guest speakers share their experiences. In doing so, I have pushed myself to learn about other nations at a deeper level. I collect the research about holidays and traditions across the globe, and I come up with activities to represent them and engage students in learning. For instance, the most recent meeting I have organized is based on the celebration of light that many countries have during the winter months. During the meeting, we made candles as I presented on the Hindu holiday Diwali, the Swedish holiday Sankta Lucia, and Kwanzaa which is based on Egyptian and Southeastern African traditions.
