How does this music connect to your culture and other cultures?
As a child growing up in Sweden, this song becomes a staple in the Swedish musical culture. Every Swede holds this classic near and dear to their hearts. It is sung on the last day of school, and represents our nation as a whole. This song connects to other cultures by creating a home-sick feeling. Despite this pieces' focus on the Swedish lifestyle, it can resurface memories of childhood traditions from any culture. The pure and child-like song can reach into the heart of anyone and make them miss home, connecting people to their roots.
What is the central theme or message of the piece(s)? How was that evoked by the piece? How is that message relevant to cultures other than the one shown in the piece?
The central theme of this piece is that summer is on its way and it will bring many beautiful things. This is shown by explaining how the snows melts and the nature changes, becoming filled with berries, flowers, and animals. Although this theme doesn't directly relate to all cultures (seasons and summer aren't the same everywhere), everyone's environment is unique. Just as this song associates the streams and wildflowers to Swedish summer, others can affiliate aspects of their environment to their culture.
What does the piece indicate about the culture of the country where the piece is from?
This piece shows what it's like to grow up in Sweden. It describes the exploration and freedom that fills the hearts of children and teens. The song shows how summer in Sweden is unique and is a time for people to be happy and enjoy the outdoors, which they all do.
Describe the mood or thoughts (affect) evoked by the piece. Describe the devices used by the artist(s) to create this effect (i.e. compositional technique, media, use of elements and principles, etc.)
As mentioned previously, the song evokes home-sick thoughts and has a joyful, peaceful mood. The artist draws on nostalgia and uses a lot of imagery to do so. This is furthered when Astrid packs the last verse with descriptions of children enjoying nature.
Research the historical context/significance of the piece. How does the piece “fit” into this larger/global context?
Personally, I believe that this song fits into a global context by proving the individuality of this nation. It proves that all nations are unique and beautiful in their own ways.
How did this experience change your world view?
This song reminds me that the world is a gorgeous place filled with hidden gems. Also, this song changed my view by reminding me that even the smallest aspects of nature, that are often overlooked, hold something special.
